Northwave lands in the Women’s World Tour with Wiggle High5 Team

The Italian brand announces an important partnership with the British World Tour Team, that fields, among others, Elisa Longo Borghini and Kirsten Wild. Piva: “A collaboration we have pursued with determination. Women’s cycling is rising, and that’s a branch we strongly believe in”

In over 25 years, Northwave made itself a big history of success in every branch of cycling - road and offroad, men and women - but the new year just started marks a new “first” for the Italian brand: Northwave is proud to announce its first, historical partnership with a UCI Women’s World Tour team, Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling.

The British squad stands among the top teams in Women’s World cycling, and features Elisa Longo Borghini – the strongest Italian rider of the current generation, – and standout sprinter Kristen Wild among other remarkable athletes. Team Wiggle-High5 will race in Northwave’s top-range road shoes, Extreme RR, in White/Red colors.

Founded in 2013 and guided by former Pro Cyclist Rochelle Gilmore, Wiggle High5 counts on 16 athletes representing 10 Countries. Wiggle’s goal for the season will be to equal and possibly exceed a very solid, 20-win 2017 season, with the highlight of Strade Bianche won by Elisa Longo Borghini, who was also runner-up at the 2017 Giro d’Italia Femminile.

With her new Northwave Extreme RR shoes, the 26-year-old Italian athlete will pursue glory in both the stage races and the “Classics” season, before aiming for the World Championship in Innsbruck, certainly suited to her climbing skills. Dutch Kirsten Wild - 2017 Track European Champion in the Elimination race and silver medal at the 2016 Road World Championships - will bring to the team her experience in the sprints. A solid contribution is expected by another new signing, German Lisa Brennauer, and the track specialists, Australia’s Amy Cure and Annette Edmondson, as well as Italian prospect Rachele Barbieri, 2017 World Champion in the Scratch race.

Northwave’s Founder and Owner Gianni Piva showed his excitement for the new adventure with Team Wiggle High5. “Women’s Pro Cycling is one of the biggest realities of this era of the sport - he said - and its significant growth is for everyone to see. That’s why we are so happy and proud to raise the bar in our presence in the Women’s side of the sport, and to partner with one of the top teams in the Women’s World Tour. We were impressed with Wiggle High5’s overall structure and organisation, and we are looking forward to work with this very strong field of riders, and hopefully help Elisa Longo Borghini to bring more joys to the Italian fans.

Wiggle High5’s rider Elisa Longo Borghini had an excellent first impression of Northwave Extreme RR. "I really like our new Northwave shoes! - said the 2017 Giro d’Italia Internazionale Femminile’s runner-up - They are really light and the stiffness gradient is the right one for my feet. I could get used to the new brand very quickly and I’m happy that our team can be supported by this Italian brand as Northwave”.

Wiggle High5’s Founder, Owner and Team Manager Rochelle Gilmore highlighted as “our team has a very strong connection with many of cycling’s best Italian brands and now our athletes will also appreciate having the opportunity to wear one of cycling’s highest quality shoes on the market. Shoes are so important to our athlete’s performance, they push on their pedals so hard, all day long, in extreme weather - they simply need and now have the best shoe”.

Extreme RR (Road Race) is the most performing model ever produced by Northwave: a new design, a stiffer sole and, above all, the revolutionary XFrame® patented technology, finally eliminating for good the long-time issue of most of riders: the points of pressure of the upper on the foot. Extreme RR is able to make pressure points a long-gone memory thanks to a new upper construction, made of new generation materials: inner mesh for increased comfort, a stiffened mid layer for even support through the support, and a 0,5 mm highly wear-resistant outer film for protection.

What makes Extreme RR a game changer is the combination of such ultra-soft and comfortable materials with a redesigned closure that sets new benchmarks in terms of fit uniformity around the entire foot. All of that also results in the best possible performance, as all the power is effectively transmitted on the pedals, also thanks to the best-performing Northwave sole ever: Ultralight Carbon 15, made of 100% unidirectional carbon combined with a reinforced layer, boasting a stiffness index of 15.0.

Team Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling will debut with Northwave Extreme RR at the Santos Women’s Tour, in Australia, on Thursday January 11th.

In 2018, Northwave will continue its partnership with Astana Women’s Team, now in its fourth year together. The Kazakh squad will face the new season with a young roster including rising stars such as Letizia Paternoster, World and European Champion on track, and Elena Pirrone, Junior 2017 World Champion in Bergen in both road and TT race. In addition, Cuban Arlenis Sierra will try to repeat the good results of the 2017 season, characterized by 7 wins in the international calendar. Northwave equips Astana Women’s Team with Extreme RR shoes and the technical apparel realized by the Custom Project atelier in Onigo di Pederobba.

Northwave also confirmed its collaboration with Top Girls Fassa Bortolo Team, led by Nadia Quagliotto and Francesca Cauz. The athletes of the Italian team will be equipped with Extreme RR shoes and the technical apparel realized by Northwave Custom Project.
