After an exciting final stage, the Astana Pro Team rider equipped with Northwave Extreme Pro took the overall win in the Basque stage race
Ion Izagirre and Northwave have been a consistent presence in the first positions of stage races in the early part of the season. The last joy in time for the Astana Pro Team rider came on Saturday April 13th, on the occasion of Itzulia Basque Country’s last stage.
With his Northwave Extreme Pro shoes, Izagirre conquered his home race, part of the UCI World Tour calendar, by making the best of the opportunities provided in stage 6 in Eibar (Spain). In fact, the Astana rider - overall winner at Volta a La Comunitat Valenciana this year - moved on the attack with 65 Km to go, together his teammate Jakob Fuglsang, Brit Adam Yates, Irishman Dan Martin and Slovenian Tadej Pogacar.
Astana Pro Team’s frontal attack opened up a crack in Buchmann's defence plan: the German rider was unable to close the gap with the breakaway group, rapidly losing any chance to hold the GC lead. Fuglsang and Izagirre crossed the finish line in third and fourth place, respectively, behind stage winner Yates and Martin.
Ion Izagirre preceded in the GC Emanuel Buchmann (+20”), Dan Martin (+29”) and his teammate Jakob Fuglsang (+36”).
Astana Pro Team’s magic moment continues: the Kazakh World Tour squad claimed the 22nd seasonal win with Extreme Pro, the top-end road shoe developed by Northwave, characterized by the XFrame2® patented technology, securing maximum power transmission on pedals also thanks to the top-performing Powershape® Carbon 15 outsole.
