Astana Pro Team aims big with Northwave Extreme Pro

The new top-range shoes by the Italian company will ride with the Kazakh World Tour team. Season debut in Australia, at the Santos Tour Down Under, on Tuesday January 15th

A new adventure in the UCI World Tour starts for Northwave. The Italian company has signed a multi-year partnership agreement with Astana Pro Team, the Kazakh UCI World Tour team, widely regarded as one of the top outfits in road cycling.

Miguel Angel Lopez and his teammates will be equipped with the new top-range road shoes by Northwave Extreme Pro, characterized by an exclusive light blue livery in the dial and toe area, inspired to Astana Pro Team’s colors.

Astana Pro Team, one of the longest-tenured team in the World Tour, count on several top youngsters, such as Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez, overall third at Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España last year, and Danish sprinter Magnus Cort Nielsen, and more experienced athletes like Dane Jakob Fuglsang, the Izagirre brothers (Ion and Gorka) and Spain’s Luis Leon Sanchez.

Alexandr Vinokourov’s line-up faces 2019 with the goal of matching and possibly improving its solid 31-year tally of 2018, including highlight victories at Amstel Gold Race and Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, in addition to the stage wins conquered in the Grand Tours, two at the Tour de France and one at the Giro d’Italia.

Northwave constant strive for innovation in every category led the brand to look for a partner sharing the same values and ambition. With Astana Pro Team we’re starting a multi-annual plan to strengthen our position among the leading brands on the road cycling shoe market”, says Northwave’s CEO Davide Rossetti.

We are excited to open a new partnership with Northwave company. This is a well-known and quick progressing brand, ready to provide Astana Pro Team with the best possible material. Northwave has a wide range of shoes and already now we see a great desire to work hard together with the team, aiming for the biggest goals in cycling. Shoes are one of the keys to success in cycling, so we are sure that in Northwave our riders will find a great support in achieving both their personal and team goals”, said Astana Pro Team’s General Manager Alexandr Vinokourov.

Extreme Pro is the new top-end road shoe developed by Northwave, characterized by the best breakthrough technological solutions that make Extreme Pro the highest-performing Northwave shoe ever.

The Extreme Pro upper is designed with the new XFrame 2® concept, the evolution of the famous XFrame® system that succeeded in eliminating pressure points on the upper while providing the snuggest and most even fit. The most demanding riders challenged Northwave to take it to the next level: make the fit even more customizable. To comply with that, Northwave implemented a double SLW2 dial, to allow riders to tighten the fit around the instep and forefoot to different degrees for custom-fit adjustability and even finer adaptability. A new-generation microfiber even softer and more adaptable but without the stretch, means a guaranteed snug fit, greater stability and a perfect connection between the sole and closure.

That means: perfect fit for any kind of foot and ideal power transmission – further enhanced by the newest top-performing outsole Powershape® Carbon 15, featuring the exclusive Powershape® arch support. 100% made in unidirectional carbon – the stiffest on the market – with a stiffness index of 15 (the highest in the Northwave’s scale) Powershape® Carbon 15 shows a tubular-inspired design for maximum possible stiffness, not to surrender a single, valuable watt. Powershape® Carbon 15 is also Speedplay compatible, thanks to Northwave’s patented Speedplay adaptor, to reach the shortest possible distance between foot and pedal.

Astana Pro Team will debut with Northwave Extreme Pro in UCI World Tour’s opening event, the Santos Tour Down Under, in Australia, to be held from January 15th to 20th.

For the 2019 season, Northwave also confirmed the partnerships with Italian Nippo-Vini Fantini-Faizané and Wanty-Groupe Gobert. The Belgian team will participate in the Tour de France for the third year in a row with the Italian shoes, with which they also conquered the 2016 Amstel Gold Race.
